aspha-min GmbH now paving the way for sustainable asphalt road construction

20. Dezember 2024

Just in time for the 2025 paving season, aspha-min GmbH, a subsidiary of Mitteldeutsche Hartstein-Industrie AG in Hanau, is launching its business activities to market their long established additive of the same name.

The production and processing of asphalt is a matter of efficiency, environmental protection and health protection. In Germany, the introduction of a new workplace limit for vapors and aerosols from hot bitumen in 2019 added further urgency to this challenge. Against this backdrop, lowering the temperature of asphalt is becoming increasingly important, as it, along with extraction at the paving device, makes a central contribution to reducing emissions. With the new technical guidelines, reducing the temperature of asphalt will also become a standard by 2026 at the latest.

One of the oldest and most proven solutions in this field is aspha-min® - a fine, free-flowing zeolite for the direct modification of asphalt at the mixing plant.

The development of aspha-min® began at MHI as early as the mid-1990s, with first public test sections starting in 1998. Added during the production of asphalt, the additive gradually releases water vapor into the mixer, temporarily increasing the binder volume. This effect allows the production and/or processing temperature of asphalt mix to be reduced by about 30 degrees without impairing its quality or recyclability. Vapors and aerosols are thereby reduced by up to 80%. Ultimately, lowering the processing temperature also helps to reduce energy consumption.

Since its market launch in 2006, aspha-min® has excelled numerous times in Germany and other countries and continents and is now a widely known and appreciated solution for meeting both health and safety as well as ecological requirements.

In view of the overall increasing demands for sustainable construction methods, lowering the temperature of asphalt with the help of products like aspha-min® is a forward-looking and necessary step for road construction.

For this reason, MHI Group has decided to continue and gradually expand the development and marketing of the product from January 2025 under an independent company - the aspha-min GmbH. The newly founded company is based in Hanau, Germany, with postal and telephone accessibility in the premises of the previous sales company, MHI Naturstein & Baustoffservice GmbH in Wächtersbach.
